Wildlife Crime

I am not going claim I am an expert on wildlife crime. Or, pass opinion on all aspects of wildlife crime. Owning an education centre, focusing on Birds of Prey, I will try and provide a balanced view on acts classed as illegal against all Birds of Prey.

In my opinion, our well respected bird protection charity, has become too diverse and politically motivated to be effective in preventing crimes against raptors. They have become famous for appearing on the scene after the crime has been committed. With budget cuts in the public sector, our police forces are trying to do more with fewer resources. In the present climate, it is all about ticking boxes, providing statistics, and meeting targets.

Personal experience tells me that "alleged" poisoning acts against common Birds of Prey are ignored. If the bird were an icon, such as the Golden Eagle, or, White-tailed Sea Eagle, the "authorities" would be queuing at the door. A crime is a crime, no matter who the victim is.

As with all crime, deterrents are no longer in place to prevent criminals from carrying out those crimes. If they were, we would not be considering building more prisons. Make the punishment fit the crime. Murder, life, life means life, no parole. Kill an animal, jail for six months. Then we might see a change in society. Too much consideration given to the criminal, not the victim. Human Rights ?

Peregrine egg theft

You may have read the recent story regarding the conviction of a renowned egg thief for stealing wild Peregrine falcon eggs. This article tells the whole story regarding how the eggs were cared for, hatched, and located back in the wild.

I have found a website dedicated to reporting on crime against raptors in Scotland. I can see from the reports provided, those involved are passionate about their work. The website may give the general public an insight into what goes on behind the scenes.

Reports

The reports below show the number of incidents in 2008 & 2009. The frustrating thing about the reports is the number that are "Under police investigation". Does this mean they are being investigated, forgotten, or being taken no further ??
